Simplifying KVM-over-IP Deployment: G&D and NETGEAR AV Reduce Setup Complexity

In modern broadcast, Pro AV, and KVM environments, IP-based infrastructures are valued for good reason. They support flexible system design, make expansion easier, and help organizations adapt workflows as requirements evolve. However, as KVM-over-IP infrastructures continue to grow in popularity, one point is coming increasingly into focus: implementation has to be just as simple and reliable as day-to-day operation.

Why ease of deployment matters in modern IP environments

That is especially true in professional KVM-over-IP projects. Today’s environments are rarely built as isolated systems. They often need to bring together different switch types, different speed classes, and multiple device categories within a single infrastructure. In that context, interoperability is a practical requirement for building systems that can be implemented efficiently and scaled with confidence.

At the same time, ease of configuration has become a key quality factor. In professional installations, success depends not only on what a system can do in live operation, but also on how predictably it can be deployed. Reliability starts long before a user switches sources or moves between workstations. It starts with a network foundation that has been prepared correctly and consistently from the outset.

For KVM admins, planners, and integrators, that makes deployment efficiency highly relevant. The less manual effort required on the infrastructure side, the easier it becomes to commission projects, document them cleanly, and extend them later without revisiting the same network checklist again and again.

A practical step toward simpler implementation

This is where the G&D KVM-over-IP™ Plugin comes into play within the NETGEAR AV ecosystem. The plugin is designed to simplify deployment in professional KVM-over-IP environments by reducing manual configuration work on the network side. It allows ports or larger parts of the NETGEAR AV Line infrastructure to be assigned a dedicated G&D KVM-over-IP profile. Based on this setup, a dedicated VLAN for our KVM-over-IP products can be created. Required settings for these deployments, including IGMP Snooping Querier, QoS, and related parameters, are activated automatically.

That matters because it turns a traditionally manual part of implementation into a more structured and repeatable process. Instead of configuring the underlying network behavior setting by setting, teams can apply a profile aligned with the needs of the KVM environment. The result is significantly less manual work on the infrastructure side and a setup experience that comes close to plug-and-play.

Turning network functions into operational benefits

What makes this relevant for customers is not the automation alone, but the outcome it creates in day-to-day project work.

For planners, the plugin supports a more predictable deployment model. For integrators, it reduces time spent on repetitive switch-side setup and helps lower the risk of inconsistencies between installations. For KVM admins, it makes the infrastructure easier to roll out, easier to maintain, and easier to expand as requirements grow.

In other words, network functions are translated into practical value. A dedicated KVM profile is not just a configuration shortcut. It helps improve consistency. Automatic activation of settings such as IGMP Snooping Querier and QoS is not simply a technical convenience. It supports stable behavior and reduces the chance of avoidable setup errors. And a dedicated VLAN is not just a network design detail. It helps create a cleaner and more reliable foundation for professional KVM-over-IP operation. That combination of simplicity, usability, reliability, and deployment efficiency is what gives its relevance in the market.

Two complementary strengths in one solution

We contribute our long-established KVM know-how: security features, high video quality with bluedec™, near-zero latency operation, and workflow-enhancing capabilities such as FreeSeating and CrossDisplay-Switching. With resilience features such as DirectRedundancyShield and broad experience in professional KVM workflows, we focus on how users work productively and reliably in demanding environments.

NETGEAR AV provides the network infrastructure on which these workflows run reliably. Its AV-focused switching, high-performance networking, PoE++ support, redundancy options, easy expansion, and centralized configuration through an intuitive GUI create the basis for scalable and dependable deployments. Just as importantly, different switch types and speed classes can be combined more easily within the same environment.

As Laurent Masia, Senior Director of Product Line Management at NETGEAR AV puts it, “the partnership with G&D was a natural step, as we share a common understanding of the requirements of modern, mission-critical IP workflows. By combining G&D’s proven KVM expertise with NETGEAR AV’s networking technology, we are creating powerful, scalable, and easy-to-implement solutions for control rooms, broadcast environments, and other professional applications. Together, we help our customers make the transition to KVM-over-IP efficient, reliable, and future-proof.”

This highlights the practical value of the collaboration: we bring the KVM application expertise, while NETGEAR AV helps ensure that KVM management traffic and KVM data traffic run on a properly configured and reliable network infrastructure.

“In contrast to DirectKVM, with KVM-over-IP we hand over the core of KVM distribution – in other words, the central part of signal distribution – to the network infrastructure,” said Andreas Gerlach, EVP Innovation at G&D and VuWall. “If the network does not function correctly or is configured incorrectly, the KVM data cannot perform with the level of quality users expect from G&D. This makes us all the more pleased to be working with a partner like NETGEAR AV, which has specifically optimized its expertise and versatile networking hardware for G&D’s KVM-over-IP projects.”
